On March 11th I attended a live recording of Jonathan Fink’s Silicon Curtain YouTube channel and podcast at the Ukrainan Cultural Centre in London. It was one of the most impressive interviews I have seen on the subject of Russia’s disgraceful invasion of Ukraine. Jonathan’s guest was Roman Trokhymets, a young Ukrainian veteran whose story is both extraordinary and deeply moving.
Before the interview Thomas Brayford introduced a Scripps News documentary about Roman by Jason Bellini. It followed Roman’s journey over several years, from the front lines of the war to the personal struggle that followed. The film showed not only his military service, but also the severe psychological cost of war, including repeated concussions and PTSD. It was a stark reminder that for many soldiers the war does not end when they leave the battlefield.
Roman Trokhymets is a Ukrainian sergeant and sniper who first joined the Azov Regiment in 2014 during the fighting in Donbas. After Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 he returned to active service. He later became widely known through social media for sharing first-hand reflections from the front. One of his videos gained more than a million views and a clip of him pausing during a firefight to admire a sunset brought him international attention. It was a moment that seemed to reveal something essential about his character: even in war he held on to his humanity.
What makes Roman such a compelling figure is not only his combat experience but the way he reflects on it. With a background in psychology, profiling, art and photography, he speaks with unusual insight about both the realities of war and its emotional consequences. During the interview he spoke with honesty and calm authority, not only about combat, but also about the hidden injuries carried by those who survive. He has also become an important advocate for PTSD awareness and support for Ukrainian soldiers.
Roman was also present during the 2023 missile strike on a restaurant in Kramatorsk where many civilians seated around him were killed, adding yet another layer of trauma to an already severe wartime experience.
Jonathan Fink led the conversation with real skill. On Silicon Curtain he regularly interviews historians, journalists, analysts and Ukrainians directly affected by the war. His programs stands out for the quality of his guests, the depth of the discussions and the seriousness with which he approaches the subject. He understands that this war is not just another news story, but the biggest moral and political struggle of our time.
This live recording of Silicon Curtain was a powerful reminder of why independent platforms like Jonathan Fink’s matter so much. They create space for voices like Roman’s to be heard with depth, seriousness and humanity. At a time when the war in Ukraine can too easily be reduced to headlines and statistics, this interview brought its human reality sharply back into focus.

11 березня я відвідав прямий запис YouTube-каналу та подкасту Джонатана Фінка «Silicon Curtain» в Українському культурному центрі в Лондоні. Це було одне з найвражаючих інтерв’ю, які я бачив, на тему ганебного вторгнення Росії в Україну. Гостем Джонатана був Роман Трохимець, молодий український ветеран, чия історія є водночас надзвичайною та глибоко зворушливою.
Перед інтерв’ю глядачі переглянули документальний фільм Scripps News про Романа, знятий Джейсоном Белліні. Він розповідав про подорож Романа протягом кількох років, від передової війни до особистої боротьби, яка послідувала за нею. Фільм показав не лише його військову службу, але й важку психологічну ціну війни, включаючи повторні струси мозку та посттравматичний стресовий розлад. Це було суворим нагадуванням про те, що для багатьох солдатів війна не закінчується, коли вони залишають поле бою.
Роман Трохимець — український сержант і снайпер, який вперше вступив до полку «Азов» у 2014 році під час бойових дій на Донбасі. Він також став важливим прихильником обізнаності про посттравматичний стресовий розлад та підтримки українських солдатів.
Роман також був присутній під час ракетного обстрілу ресторану в Краматорську у 2023 році, де загинуло багато мирних жителів, які сиділи навколо нього, що додало ще один шар травми до вже важкого воєнного досвіду.
Джонатан Фінк вів розмову з справжньою майстерністю. На «Кремнієвій завісі» він регулярно інтерв’ює істориків, журналістів, аналітиків та українців, які безпосередньо постраждали від війни. Його робота вирізняється якістю його гостей, глибиною дискусій та серйозністю, з якою він підходить до теми. Він розуміє, що ця війна — не просто чергова новина, а найбільша моральна та політична боротьба нашого часу.
Цей прямий запис «Кремнієвої завіси» став потужним нагадуванням про те, чому незалежні платформи, такі як Джонатана Фінка, мають таке велике значення. Вони створюють простір для того, щоб голоси, подібні до голосу Романа, були почуті з глибиною, серйозністю та людяністю. У той час, коли війну в Україні занадто легко звести до заголовків та статистики, це інтерв’ю різко повернуло до фокусу її людської реальності.
