35 years of Independence.

Last Sunday I joined Ukrainians in London marking the 35th anniversary of their country’s independence.

I want to begin with the people in fluorescent jackets. Support Ukraine’s security volunteers are easy to overlook when everything is going well. They stand quietly at the edges of these gatherings. Occasionally somebody arrives determined to disrupt proceedings. They shout abuse or attempt to intimidate. They don’t succeed.

That quiet professionalism is part of a much larger volunteer effort. Support Ukraine / London Euromaidan has campaigned for Ukraine in Britain since the Euromaidan Revolution began in 2013. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, its volunteers have organised hundreds of rallies and events, raised money, delivered humanitarian aid, lobbied politicians and worked relentlessly to keep Ukraine visible in Britain. I would also like to acknowledge the volunteers who transport and operate the sound equipment, sell merchandise, collect donations and do the work that allows these events to happen week after week.

Last Sunday was the fourth Ukrainian Independence Day rally I have attended in London. And the war is still going. Worse, it is becoming more dangerous.

Ukraine is now striking much deeper inside Russia. Long-range drones are hitting oil refineries, industrial plants and logistics infrastructure supporting the Russian economy and its war machine. The attacks are becoming increasingly effective and increasingly difficult for Russia to ignore.

At the same time, Russia is intensifying its assault on Ukraine. Huge waves of missiles and increasingly fast drones are stretching Ukrainian air defences brutally thin. In July alone, the United Nations recorded 437 civilians killed and 2,610 injured, the highest monthly civilian death toll since May 2022.

Another winter is approaching. Russia is again attacking Ukraine’s power stations and electricity networks. Transport and supply hubs are being struck. Food shortages are being to reappear across the country. The intention seems horribly clear: weaken infrastructure and make ordinary life impossible as the cold returns.

The situation is deteriorating and the war is escalating. Unless Russia is stopped, not merely contained, Ukraine could fall. Then Europe will find itself fighting a much larger war that years of hesitation helped to create. Ukraine cannot indefinitely be expected to absorb the violence on Europe’s behalf.

And yet, last Sunday, Ukrainians still came to celebrate. Families found friends. Priests stood beside volunteers and campaigners. Children wrapped themselves proudly in blue and yellow. Some of those children have now spent a substantial part of their childhood living with war.

They are the reason those security volunteers stand quietly at the edge of the crowd and why Ukraine with true Western democracies must defeat Russia.

Slava Ukraine!
